Re: How many women here own their own boat?

Don't know how it is in the States but if they're together a year here, it's half each for everything.

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Panope - I'm curious about that fuel sump setup - firstly, how are bronze & alloy inferior to S/S & alloy? We all know about alloy & S/S corroding together.

Second, why did you use screw in elbows...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Now you're just showing off! ;)

You need to give BS some style lessons. You seem to sort of subscribe to his underlying philosophy of strong & simple & foolproof but there is just no comparison in...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Assuming the usual # of feet of heavy battery cable, that pic has around 25% - 30% of the entire cost of my boat in it.

If I stared at that pic too long while contemplating rewiring my boat...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

IMO, the Legends are the best looking boats they ever built. A friend has a last gen 38 and it is just FULL of thoughtful details. I especially like the way the through hulls are clustered under the...

Or somebody else?

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

There are better woods than teak for things like stuffing boxes. Ironwood, gumwood - any of those sort of greasy, super heavy woods.

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

You can tell plantation teak at a glance - no colour. It's still better than almost anything else for the outside of a boat, especially if you plan to leave it bare where colour doesn't matter after...

Re: $6,600 to rebuild Atomic 4? replace/rebuild

Nice job. By the way, that $4K that went to Moyer? That would have been about the cost of the INCIDENTALS if you had swapped to a diesel. :)

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

There was an interesting article in the British "Practical Boat Owner" mag a month or so ago. It was about a couple sailing high latitudes (Falklands) who got rolled a couple of times and dismasted...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Ironically, the people who choose their vehicles based on their supposed "crash worthiness" nearly always end up with vehicles at the lowest end of crash performance - pickups and other truck based...

Re: 1 inch prop on 25mm prop shaft?

Mixing SAE & Metric is a mugs game. It's bad enough when you have both types on the same boat or car but to mix them on the same piece is asking for it - they are NOT the same, even though they get...

Re: Hydraulic steering for sailboat

Slow is 3 1/2 turns lock to lock on a 30 footer - 1/2 or one turn would be lots.

I'm passionate about it because I have it on my boat.

Never again.

Re: Hydraulic steering for sailboat

I've got hydraulics on my boat and I hate it - HATE IT. Numb, insensitive, slow - it has NO redeeming features, The only reason for using it on a boat is necessity - center cockpit, clearance issues,...

Re: Sledgehammer saga continues

Calling that place a marina is a bit of a joke - it's a glorified storage yard and they don't even have a travel lift.

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

Maybe it could, but that's not the point - it was designed (so I understand) primarily to be a singlehanded daysailer, not a long term cruiser.

People have sailed all sorts of unlikely things...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

I find the origami process very intriguing and I can't argue with steel for it's strength & watertightness for long term cruising.

BUT....

Brent is just too fanatical and one tracked for me -...

Re: Pros and cons of steel sailboats

The Maestro has never been "anti-steel", he has designed some steel boats.

He is anti "cheap, ugly" boats and pro "beautiful" boats.

It costs no more to build a beautiful boat than an ugly one,...
