Raymarine Auothelm ST1200 mouning in Tanzer 7.5

Anyone have advice on mounting the Raymarine ST1000 autohelm on a Tanzer 7.5? There are a number of fitting adapters available to get the X,Y and Z coordinates correct.

Also, my boat has a single battery (no electric start) that runs the radio, depth/speed gauge, bilge pump, and sometime the running lights. It is connected to a good-quality solar charger. With the addition of the auothelm, is I wise to put a second battery into the system? I sail solo a fair bit, and expect the auothelm will be used a lot.

Sincerely
Jack,

I've got the Simrad version mounted in a C&C 25, they mount the exact same way. About all I can say is be as accurate as possible with your measurements. I lashed my tiller in the centre using the cockpit winches as "adjusters" kept measuring from side to side. When I had it as good as I could get it I did the other measurements and started drilling. Mine mounts under the tiller on the drop pin holder thing. Other end is right into the seat not far infront of the transom.
I really don't know if you need two batteries, my boat came set up with a start battery and 2 12v house batteries, my motor does provide some charging, shore power the rest. I've never run low on juice, I also sail solo a lot but don't use the TP that much, usually just when raising and lowering the sails. I run about the same electronics as you but no solar, do run a gps/plotter. Next years project will be solar.
How many watts of solar are you running?

A good solar system still can't force the sun to shine. I guess it depends on how far\long you sail, but I would assume it's far enough if you are installing an auto.

On my 7.5 I have dual batteries and I would never want to run single now. What I do is use 1 battery for all my items. Once that battery runs low I treat the second like a "reserve fuel tank", you only use it knowing that you are now at "half tank of fuel left to get home". When I switch to the "reserve" the solar charger is attached to the first battery to help recharge it as needed until we get to shore power. I cycle which battery I use, so for example if I went sailing for 4 days and used battery 1 and made it home fine, then I would charge the system and on the next trip would use battery 2.

A sailboat like ours obviously can sail with 0 electrical, but I prefer having a "reserve battery" within reach so I know I will have the vitals (depth sounder, radio, lights!) to safety.
