Tartan 33 exhaust

The factory exhaust on my 1982 Tartan 33 is 1 5/8", and exits low aft on the port side through a molded in through hull that is about 1 1/4". It exits below the waterline under power. Did the factory change this for later model 33's or 34's? Seems small for the Universal 5424, and also seems like it shouldn't exit below the waterline due to backpressure. I'm looking for alternatives to install a larger diameter exhaust. Does anyone have a different setup, either factory or one you've installed yourself?
