Just North of Hells gate

Hello Everyone

The tides are against leaving tomorrow morning to go to LI Sound.

So I am leaving this afternoon to motor past Hells Gate.

Then I want to spend the night near there and head out into the sound in the morning.

There are a couple of marinas near there, but my chart shows fewof them have 6 ft draft I need for my boat.

Any recommendations for somewhere to spend the night?

Andreas

Andreas,

Low tide at the Battery is @ 4:39 in the morning tomorrow. If you follow the usual guidance and head up river 2 hours after low tide. ( 6:30 am) you'll get a nice ride and be in the LI sound by 8:30-9:00 am.

But really you can leave the battery probably up to 9 or 10 am..and still carry a fair current. The current turns to the west @ 12:11 p.m.. @ Hell gate.

Then, Just keep going past the throgs neck bridge and spend the night at City Island...or Manhasset Bay...Port Washington? Or keep on going..I don't know where your final destination is.

City Island has no diesel though, if you need fuel. but you could pick some up @ the Capri Marina on Manhasset bay.

If you leave tonight...Low tide @ the Battery is @ 4 pm...if you head up river @ 6 pm..you'd probably be arriving at your destination in the dark...or dusk. It's also Rush hour.

I'd leave 1st thing in the morning...that early on a Saturday..you'll see much less ferry traffic.

Andreas, I'm not sure how close to HG you want to stay, but there are holding anchorages all along the way. If you look closely at the chart, there are coves marked as "general anchorage". I think Hallet's Cove and Pot Cove (on either side of the buldging neck of Astoria are marked for that. Come a little further, past the Whitestone Bridge, and the north shore all the way to Throgg's Neck is an anchorage. Just east of the Throgg's Neck on the south side is Little Bay, which is a nicely protected anchorage with plenty of depth for you, a good bottom, and enough of a bay that there's no traffic crossing it. That's the one I've used, although it might be an hour's ride from the HG proper.

Little Bay--Not Little Neck Bay.

Folks in Little Neck Bay get outright feisty about boats coming in and just anchoring as they please.

Gottcha.

I don't stop and smell the roses...when transiting the east river...so I'm ignorant of the feisty locals...good info, duly noted

Re: Just North of Hells gate

My 'usual' for such a tide/current combo is to get through Hell Gate and simply anchor near the western end of City Island between High and Rat Islands ..... with an early start in the AM towards the east.

Just a note on Port Washington. The town moorings are FREE for the first 2 days, and the town is very friendly, with lots to do.
