Sounds like a nice sleepy destination?? Were you there in peak season?
weekday/weekend? Any decent anchorage/crowded?
Have only gone up Ct. River to Essex and Hamburg Cove in late September
for fear of overcrowding in peak season.
Looks like a great reason to explore a few more miles north.

I've taken spring and fall trips up the river (give the engine a light workout and a freshwater rinse). Once went up to Portland; the other times I turned around at East Haddam / Goodspeed Opera House. I had a mooring one night at the Brewers in Deep River.
In East Haddam, you can anchor south of the bridge, east of the channel. Not as nice as Hamburg Cove, but the village and opera house are worth a visit.
Chester and Deep River are nice, especially in September/Oct.
