Oxnard to Alamitos

I'm sailing my new (to me) Catalina 30 from Channel Islands Marina down to her new home in Long Beach. I reckon favorable afternoon winds will get me there in one long day. I anticipate I'd traverse South Bay across the mouth round Palos Verdes and make Alamitos Bay in about 12 hours. Any flawed thinking there?

MJ--That's kind of a no brainer trip. Use SailFlow.com and/or PassageWeather.com to pick a window and go for it. Stay far enough off shore that you don't get stuck in the wind bubble off Palos Verdes--8 to 10 miles-and angle into Angles Gate on port so you can make the run to Long Beach behind the breakwater. I'd leave at odark:30 am shooting for a 1800 to 1730 arrival. Ensure you have adaquate fuel and clean filters before you leave just in case but you should have no difficulty. The ride down to the jetties at Alamitos Bay from breakwater can be a little exciting if its your first tiem. Just watch the gybe to ensure you don't find yourself sailing by the lee. Once you get the ABYC on the north side of the channel you'r home free. That's a nice harbor. We were at ABYC for many years.

FWIW...

We just picked up our new to us boat in Channel Island Harbor and took her down to Redondo Beach a couple weeks ago. Be ready for no wind, especially early, and usually a good breeze in the afternoon. However on our trip, we never had much wind the whole day. Took about 7 hours to get to Redondo Beach.

Thanks for the replies -- very helpful stuff. We had about a 6 hour sail yesterday in the Oxnard/Ventura area just getting a feel for the new girl -- wind came up around 1100 - I expect that heading to Alamitos next Saturday we'll be seeing much of the same, burning diesel until late morning.

mjneberg, we have to do this same trip soon except that we will be heading to Shoreline Marina. We are planning on going sometime in January, February or March. Did your trip go well? How long did it take?

Funny. We made the same trip in the Fall of 2010 and had the same trouble. Motored all the way.

Same thing, had to motor it. Alamitos is awesome. I was on 30 for a bit but, now docked in Shoreline trying to bribe my way back. 2yr wait!
