Storm jib on baby stay, Gladiateur/Pretorien?

I am the new owner of a Gladiateur. I am wondering if other owners of Gladiateurs, Pretoriens, and other Wauquiez's with a baby stay just fore of the mast have used that stay for hoisting a small storm jib.

Is it possible to use the baby stay for a small storm jib? Have any of you done that? Did you need to add a backing plate or other reinforcement? Did you need to use running backs?

Thanks!

Hi Brian,

I know of one Pretorien that I believe uses their baby stay that way. I believe that they have a removable fitting on the deck so they can move it out of the way to store their dinghy also.

The issue, I believe, is that the baby stay is located lower on the mast than the running backs and so you can induce a mast bend at that location if you are adding a load to the baby stay that it wasn't intended for.

Brian,

I have a Pretorien, which has the stay forward of the mast. I believe Henri intended for this to stabilize the mast and not for setting any sail. If you view the stays upper attachment to the mast, it appears to me to not have the functionality to support a storm jib under stormy sea conditions.
