Here we go again...Hermine was a non event here but as we all know...past performance is not an indicator of future results. We'll be watching carefully.
Glad I decided to end the season a little early this year. Boat is currently at the work dock ready for the mast to be pulled and boat stored on land. Was too windy today on Long Island so it looks like Monday. Well ahead of any threat from Matthew should it eventually head up here. The bad news we have booked a charter next spring on a Catamaran based out of Georgetown, Exuma . Sent good wishes to the Captain who has already moved to his Hurricane hole and has plans to be on land when it hits. Hope all in Matthew's path get through unscathed.
I just posted the same, in your other thread. I think you're there now. You can bolt up the Hudson, which is truly a beautiful cruise anyway. Especially now, with leaves starting to turn.
OK EXTREME WATERSPORTS FANS!!!!!!!!! mandatory gratis event !!!!!
in the bahamas in not much more time will be the world championship extreme anchoring challenge.
there is no entry fee
there is no application
entry is mandatory for those remaining in bahamas at this time.
seems some guy named matthew wants to test your skillzzzz, and has worked his way up to category of major c4-c5 cane. wow. this is gonna be interesting. i hope you all had time for proper preparation for this intensity of play. there is still a little time for the remainder of your prep. oh donot turn your back on him as he knows how to rapidly intensify....
i do hope you all are safe and tucked in well.this is gonnabe a bit busy. you neeed rest and a good meal before this marathon. batten down interior as well as exterior of boat. there is a HUGE difference between cat 3 and cat 5, which will feel like cat 7, i sware.
oh yeah--add the whiny floridians and the east coast stoics to this event as well....is a monster.... some of the bahama boats may be found on the east coast entry list, as stuff happens.....
ok cat 3 potential for south carolina.
those in bahamas-- best of good wishes. looks like you are it.
did anyone put a tracker in boat so mebbe be easier to find after the storm,in case of need????
Planning to leave Hampton for BVI move 2. Sure makes you nervous. Used to be things peaked in September but now get them early- get them late. Climate change sucks.
Reminds me of standing at the ticket booth, for the Annapolis Sailboat Show, in light rain. I asked the ticket booth guy whether the rain usually affected ticket sales. He said it depends. For powerboat week, it lowers attendance dramatically. For sailboat week, attendance increases.
Remember that the cone is just the likely error in the prediction of the center of the hurricane. The footprint of significant impact for a big hurricane is much larger.
The way the cold fronts are pushing through here lately, I'm guessin that Mathew will be pushed farther east than predicted, but what the Hell do I know.
The thing I keep reading over and over is that the High in the Atlantic and Low over the States is making the ultimate path of this storm very hard to predict. This storm is still closer to South America than the Florida Keys. I'm no meteorologist, but I've been around long enough to understand it could do almost anything on the East Coast. Hoping for the best. By this weekend, I may need to prepare for the worst.
Just bought my first sailboat this weekend, a very well cared for 1966 Soverel 28. We will be keeping the boat in Southport, NC and the tracks aren't looking great for the area right now!
Headed back down Wednesday to get the boat all prepped and ready for the storm.
This is what worries me - the low pressure centered on NY with high pressure to the east and west. This is next Saturday. Blue is low pressure. It seems to me the door is open. On the other hand, I think the GFS has the speed of Matthew wrong. Its moving slower than this model shows. But if the timing is just right this thing could go right up the Hudson.
Too early to tell what might happen here on the Chesapeake but it's enough of a concern that I'm making contingency plans for the coming weekend to rearrange the schedule (it was supposed to be a non-boating weekend) in case I need to go prep the boat. The updated cone from 11 AM today has it pulling more westerly toward the US east coast than previously. As usual with these things, wait and see and hope for the best for everybody out there.
We've just scheduled our haul-out for Wednesday afternoon. It's too early to tell what Matthew will do in regards to NC and after Isabel and Irene, we're not taking any chances. Hoping for the best and preparing for the worst.
Assuming Matthew does not make a sharp turn to the west off the NJ Shore, coastal NJ will get high winds, big surf and back bay flooding. Cape May Harbor is well protected but flooding in the past has covered the commercial sport fishing dock along route 109.
Cape May is not a bad place to wait out the storm, but if conditions permit get up the Delaware to Delaware City or through the C&D to Worton, Bohemia or Sassafras. Summit halfway through the C&D is also well protected, Chesapeake City would have been an option but in serious need of dredging.
Delaware City has good public transit options with a bus to Wilmington DE a short walk from the marina.
Already done! Sitting in Delaware City now and am going to wait to see what is going on before I decide where to go hide.
