Any experience in Okinawa/Ryukyu Islands

Well, I am going to be stationed in Japan for the next few years and will be sailing out of Kadena and Naha. Just wondering if anyone has Japanese Island sailing experience. That includes on the Ryukyu chain, as I don't plan on being up north by main land Japan.

Thanks.

You might find the information in the Rodger Henry Files by Alvah Simon of interest. Starting at The Roger Henry File | Cruising World

"It is not so much for its beauty that the sea makes a claim upon men's hearts, as for that subtle something, that quality of air, that emanation from the waves, that so wonderfully renews a weary spirit."

Here is a good primer. My boat is in Ginowan Marina right now and we've done the Kerama trip a couple of times.

Re: Any experience in Okinawa/Ryukyu Islands

I expect you have long ago gone off.

But we sailed from the Philippines to Ishigaki, to Okinawa and up the chain to Kagoshima and up the west coast of Kyushu. Eventually wintered in Korea, then sailed back through Japan's inland sea and arrived home last summer in Victoria.

Any questions, just shoot.

DubeJ,
Like buoytalk said, I'm sure you're long gone by now, but I, too, am moving to Oki next May and wanted to see what the boating/sailing scene is.
Are you still there?
Mrs. and I are planning on getting our license there (Class 1 or ?) and buying a nice weekender to explore the islands with.

HAVE FUN there!

It's been WAY to long ago for me to provide any useful sail boat info. BUT, I can tell you the SCUBA diving was GREAT there. We had to pass a "dangerous marine life" course before diving, but it sure was GREAT!

Greg,
We will! We're super stoked to get there and start the water fun. I haven't heard a bad thing about Oki yet!

I have never sailed there. I have flown over a few times though and both are beautiful and worth the visit
