Pros: nice little boat, pretty well built
Cons: company out of biz, cabin window is large and hard to rebed

Sweet little sailor. well balanced and behaved, stiff but moves in light air. very basic accommodations. decent construction, tough little boat.

Pros: Solid, tough, simple design, ample space with open plan below, cockpit with bridgedeck, lazerette for outboard.
Cons: narrow space on combings.

I learned to solo sail on a Ranger 20. I loved that boat and hate that I let it slip away from me, so when I saw an opportunity to buy a Ranger 24, I pounced on it. It has very similar sailing characteristics of the Ranger 20 lending to it hull shape and running rigging layout. standing rigging is a bit beefier on the Ranger 24 having two sets of inner shrouds to complement the outer shrouds on the mast. I love the spirited sail that this boat is capable of, and even using massive 153 drifter without reefing the main in gusty winds, I felt safe on this boat even when the gunwales were lapping saltwater! Running close-hauled and on her heel, she'll do 7 knots--I've clocked it with the gps, average speed about 4.5-5.1 knots.

This boat sails itself in light air, bungee chords on the tiller handle are a must when single handing her in heavy winds. The main winches are mounted on the bridge-deck just forward of the cockpit, making sheet handling from inside the causeway and steering with a tiller extension possible. The boomvang runs along a track on the bridge-deck as well, making handling important lines for tacking right where they can be obviously accessible.

I highly recommend a Ranger 24 for sailors of all skill levels. They make a great learning vessel, and are impressive with speed and handling for those who like to lighten their load and race the **** out of their boat! They are safe and practically unsinkable. Provisioned and equipped properly. . . . I would take her ANYWHERE. These boats were built with positive flotation throughout.

The Ranger 24 should be considered a valuable and highly sought-after pocket cruiser. They are aesthetically pleasing--sailors at the marina where my boat resides comment on her sleek sporty lines and are shocked to learn that she's a 38-year-old vessel.

Raymond Richards used the Haida 26 design (MK1) as a basis for the Ranger 24. The Haida 26 is a noteworthy circumnavigator, and the Ranger 24 mimics all the best aspects of the Haida 26--only slightly smaller. I think this boat is much more fun to sail than my previous boats (one of which was a Catalina 27.)

Some boats are Cadillacs. The Ranger 24 is a Corvette!
