Pros: Strong hull, Modified full keel with aft hung rudder. Very fast. Strong low aspect rig. Carrys a lot of sail. 10 ft beam. Beautiful classic design.
Cons: Some came with an Atomic 4. No chart table. Sparce interior

I was fortunate enough to purchase this neglected 1965 Cal 30 hull no. 69 for a good price. She sails almost without wind, is very fast and has a strong low aspect rig which works well. One day I was on an opposite tack with a 36 foot "plastic fantastic" for about 2 hours. Every time we would cross paths I gained on her. Finally she dropped her sails and motored into the harbor after being beaten by "an old boat". The early Cal 30 seems to be underated because they are confused with the flush deck models. They are fast beautiful and strong. A Rawson 30 would be a good comparison however I would prefer the Cal for the larger beam. My Cal 30 came with an Atomic 4 which was upgraded to a Westerbeke 10 hp diesel. A very important upgrade. The Westerbeke pushes her at 6 knots at 2200 rpm. This is good. some days I would prefer a little more power however. Things I would change. Upgrade the rigging. Add a holding tank for the head. Squeeze in a chart table. Add some teak to the interior. Look for a picture of this Cal in the users pics soon. A great design by the late Bill Lapworth.
