The Cal 36 is the fiberglass interpretation of Bill Lapworth's wooden L-36 which was Lapworth's favorite boat according to his wife. It surfs well and goes to weather well (albeit noisily in short, steep chop) with every other point of sail a pleasure. The long keel and huge spade rudder make the boat feel like it's on rails through all of the gusts and varied conditions on S.F. bay. I have hull #87 and my father had hull #90. After the original mast was replaced on my father's with a Cal 40 mast section the boat went thousands of miles trouble free up and down the Mexican coast. My 36 is even tougher with the addition of a 40 hp Perkins which makes it a rated motorsailer (it can power over eight knots.) This boat is just about bullet proof and it's only weakness is light air (a result of all of the heavy modifications; big engine, teak floors, wheel, extra rigging and etc.) No one who sees it can believe it's thirty-four years old-the hull still polishes out nicely and the interior, Spartan for the times, is remarkable for the craftmanship. I really love this boat.
