Elan is a yugoslavian boat, designed by J&J design (also the designer of French boats, such as Feeling and Dufour).
The hull of the elan 33 is almost the same as the hull of the elan 31. The difference is the extended rear, by which it has been given a swim platform.
This extension is also to the advantage of the speed of the boat, while the length in the water is longer.
The construction of the deck is higher than that of the elan 31 en goes further to the front of the boat.
The boat is very light in comparison with boats of the same length (3.300 kilogram).
The elan 33 offers accommodation for 6 persons; a cabin in the front for two, a cabin in the back for two and two settee singles. When we bought our elan in 1990 it came with a petroleum stove with oven, but that was not a big succes, so we took it out and replaced it by a propane stove with grill and oven.
The whole interior is finished with afrormosia (a dark type of wood) and is very solid.
It has a large chart table with it's own seat and a lot of storing space.
The motor is a Yanmar 2GM20, 13,3 kW (18 hp) and is rather silent.
The boat has two hundred liter (hard plastic) watertanks, that are easy to clean, because they have a large opening which can be screwed off.
The boat is (generally with two persons) very easy to handle, no matter what the weather conditions are (we sailed it up to windforce 8, with squalls up to windforce 9). The boat needs just a little wind to gain some speed, but it gets exciting from 4 beaufort and up.
In 1999 we bought a new set of sails, because the old sails were no good any longer. We replaced the normal genoa for a tri-radial, assymetric one and that has improved our sailing and the handling of the boat with lots of wind enormously.
The boat has also a number of possibilities to tune the mast.
To conclude this review; we are really enthousiastic about our boat, for the years to come we don't want any other boat and last but not least, the price is much better then any other boat of the same length and construction.
By the way; the elan 33 is not built anymore, they replaced it by the elan 34 and very recently by the elan 333.
