The farther you go toward the Atlantic, the more benign the inlet becomes. Much deeper, less current to contend with, and sometimes you get a bit of help with the wind.

The hairiest inlets I've ever been through are Hatteras Inlet, Oregon Inlet, which is nothing more than a slot in the surf, Indian River Inlet, Ocean City, Maryland Inlet, and a few along the Jersey shore.
