Like any sail, trim is the key to making the boat go forward . stretchy halyards lets the sail go out of trim and on a spin halyard that means the sail pulls away from the mast head and this can cause the sail to rock back and forth or pumping which makes keeping the boat under control harder . can cause more heel a knock down and even a broach. makes steering the boat to the wind harder if the sail goes in and out of trim with every gust
