likely the line was old and chafed at the wire rope. the advantage of the toping lift over the pigtail on the backstay is that the boom can be held up at any point of sail. you can reef or drop the main at any point of sail. with the pig tail on the backstay you must be head to wind to connect the pigtail and if boat is turned it can put a big load on the backstay and even break things. The line can be replaced with any good yacht rope and most important would be a rope that is uv resistant
