Hard to believe that an end-for-end pole could work at all with that dip pole fitting.. If you've got an end-for-end pole I'd nix that fitting for a normal sliding ring.
Here are some photos of the pole end. Both ends look the same.
Clearly the 'socket' used to have some kind of pin that fit into the groove in the pole end and thus held the pole in place.
But as faster says, since the pole is symmetrical, it may be easier to just buy a new sliding ring than to figure out how to fix or replace that 45 year old fitting. Any reason that wouldn't work?
