Re: And Yet ANOTHER New Moderator!

That’s great news! Maine is an excellent resource.

Last week I was out sailing with a friend who’s buying a new catamaran and was researching his battery options. He started talking about this really amazing, in-depth article he found about lithium batteries.

I asked him if it was on Marine How To.

Of course it was!

His posts here and his website are the only places I need to find the right way to do things. If his moderation skills are half as good as his repair/upgrade knowledge, he will be a welcome addition.

Re: And Yet ANOTHER New Moderator!

I've been around long enough to see this place make many many truly dumb decisions.

This is DEFINITELY not one of them!

He is an legend amongst sailing forums for a good reason. Rarely do you come across a member who is in equal measure knowledgeable, reasonable and helpful.

Trolls and spambots watchout!

Re: And Yet ANOTHER New Moderator!

The big question is: Is moderation really necessary? Unfortunately it has led a lot of forums to essentially chat groups of single minded moderator groupies. I'm sure that won't be the case here though.

Re: And Yet ANOTHER New Moderator!

OH moderation is necessary. Believe us.

If you haven't been around long enough for anchor wars, crimping controversy, one hull vs two, is it safe to leave the harbor in less than a battleship with armor plate and tan bark sails, are modern designs what Bruce Springsteen was talking about when he was sprung from cages on high way 9 in suicide machines, will tablets get us all hopelessly lost at sea, and many more.

What I like about this site is civility. It's just sailing, it should be fun. This site has been good at keeping it that way.

And Maine has been a wealth of knowledge. I think it's fair to say there is no one that's a regular here that hasn't benefitted from his advice.

Yep, I get that point. We try to avoid it by keeping a light touch, keeping all the mods aware of what's going on, and a diversity of experience and opinion.

But yes, it's necessary. Just yesterday we had a little fire we had to put out.
And over the years cliques have formed but they're gone now

Once people have been in SailNet a while we don't really moderate them at all.

Most importantly, if you feel there's some weird undercurrent or something you want to have a chat about please PM any of us and we're happy to help/explain/take action
SailNet is the perfect size that we all know pretty much what's going on.

People can say they want freedom, but offer them the keys to what chains them, a map to where they want to go,
And they'll turn it down for the cell they know

Re: And Yet ANOTHER New Moderator!

Yes Mark, cliques is exactly what I was referring to. MainSail never fell prey to them on any forum that I know of. He gave his EXPERT opinion and left it at that. Always straightforward. He has the expert knowledge and the ability to explain topics of interest with clarity and open mindedness. His willingness to share that knowledge is a gift to all of us.
