Goiot Traditions Hatch Repair?

My 1991 Beneteau Moorings 38 coachroof hatch has a failure I donít know how to repair. The coil spring on the hinge that holds the hatch open no longer tensions when the hatch is opened. The aluminum hatch frame has a ridge of aluminum that captures one end of the spring. That ridge has worn down and the end of the spring is no longer captured. Anyone know if it can be repaired or patched?

Everyone should put there location in their profile, even if itís generically a region, rather than exact.

I first met these guys at a boat show. Very knowledgeable. I recall them saying many parts are not available for Goiot. Mine were not holding open and they told me to prop them open, donít try to tighten. If I broke the mechanism, I was out of luck. That was years ago. Give them a try, if youíre in the states.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Re: Goiot Traditions Hatch Repair?

I don't know if your frame is cast, extruded or other, but perhaps a new ridge as you call it could be TIG or aluminum wire welded onto the frame. Or maybe a hole could be drilled and tapped for a screw/bolt that takes the place of the ridge. Welding would probably require the hatch to be removed. Installing a screw might be done on board.

The Atkins and Hoyle deck hatch on my Mirage has a little nub of Al that positions the end of the spring for tension. This is my only reference to suggest solutions for your problem.

It is a cast frame. A drill and tap for a screw might work.
