Re: Purchasing Soon (hopefully)!

Thanks for all the advice everyone. My survey was postponed due to engine issues.. (the ignition coil caught fire during the starting of the motor). Repairs have been done and the survey should take place tomorrow. I hope this isn't (but know it probably is) indicative of how infrequently the boat was used which can reek havoc on a vessel just as much as anything else. Hopefully she's in good shape otherwise... I'll have the results this week and we'll have to go from there!

Do you mean the solenoid on the starter?

Yes, the solenoid. At least that is what I was told. Sorry, coil was the incorrect part.

Re: Purchasing Soon (hopefully)!

Have you determined what "repowered" means yet?

Remember, a survey can't do much more than assess current condition. Only the story of how she was used, maintained and cared for will tell you how she will stay that way. In other words, the survey may say everything works, meets code, etc. However, stuff could break the next morning.

Jeanneau 54DS

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

Re: Purchasing Soon (hopefully)!

One positive thing is the name. At least it is Sea Dog and not Sea Dawg.

Re: Purchasing Soon (hopefully)!

Haha, Yes. Sea Dog, is much better than the alternative. I'm actually quite fond of the name.

Minn,

According to the current owner it was re powered about 10 years ago and has 500 hours on a rebuilt (new gaskets and parts, not machined) volvo. Since then it has just been used to putter around the protected waters around Jacksonville, FL with no long distance cruising.

The survey came back with not major issues. No soft spots, blisters on the hull. Some blisters on the keel. Major systems all in working order.

I'm going to go through with the purchase next week!

Re: Purchasing Soon (hopefully)!

Ok, since my last post. I've closed the deal on the boat so I officially own S/V Sea Dog. Just got back (to NJ) from Jacksonville where I spent a long weekend getting to know the boat. Sailed Sat-Sun in the St. Johns river and had a great time! The boat sailed and motored great on our first shake down. I could not be happier with the boat... getting on that plane to come home yesterday was hard. really hard.

I'm going to be moving the boat from Jacksonville to West Palm in a couple months. There will be myself and two other adults who are competent sailors. (Although I think we'll take the ICW the majority, if not the whole way, so sailing may be a luxury.) Any advice on places to stop or things to watch out for along the way are always appreciated! (Of course I have up to date charts and GPS, safety gear, reliable VHS, and all the important stuff... like rum)

Re: Purchasing Soon (hopefully)!

Congratulations!! Glad to hear all worked well on your initial time on the boat. Hopefully you will get years of enjoyment out your BC31 like I did mine.
