Re: Need advice: looking to purchase a Catalina 22
The Capri has like a smaller cabin and larger cockpit and it is in theory more set up for racing. . But schnool is right... the wing keel Capri sucks going up wind..... as this is your first boat I would say it doesn't' matter - they are both 5 mph boats. If you get stuck at least you can pull up the swing keel and float off.
The C22 has a dinette, galley, bigger cabin. I'm not sure what to tell you to look for - depends on your price and how much you know about boats....sails that are crunchy ( new) and more than one size genoa. I think its $600 for a new main sail and maybe that much for a good genoa..A good outboard. If you can inspect the keep cable thats worth it. Look for any soft spots on the deck or cockpit. Not much else, check for frayed rigging cables...they are about $150 a piece.... Mine came with a nice swim ladder and the front hatch is very useful.
The swing keel gets a lot of worryy, mine so far has been fine. So many boats out there and they all seem fine so I think the keel worry is overstated. But its worth looking at the keel pin and the actual hinge the pin goes through.
