All good points. I'm not sure many small diesels have PCV valves, rather just straight breather tubes. A clogged breather would be the very first thing I checked, before surgery. Dirty engines that breath off the valve cover can throw sludge into the tube. Oil flush should be routine maintenance and rarely done by many.

All crankcases have some positive pressure, from blow by, so I'd want to be sure what Dennis is finding isn't normal breather pressure that can't get out where it should.
