Itís the form of a Title. Your ownership is documented with the USCG. As opposed to having a Title issued by a State. Some refer to it as a federal registration, which is also accurate enough. However, while you can not have both a federal and a state issued title, it is very common to also need to register in the state where you keep the boat. State registration numbers are typically placed on the bow of the vessel, unless federal documented.

Not all boats can be documented, there are minimums. 30 something feet, as I recall.

The primary advantage to being documented, as I see it, is the certainty that all liens have been identified. When titled in different States, itís possible the liens didnít follow and you get some surprise down the road. You also want to be documented, if youíre sailing internationally, although, there are some nearby exceptions. As I understand it, if a crime is committed aboard your documented vessel, anywhere in the world, the federal government will investigate, as your vessel is considered US territory (or something like that).

Thanks Minnewaska

Ok, that makes sense. I wasn't aware of larger boats having a federally issued title, as opposed to state. And the state registration, if required, is pretty much just a tax.
