Catalina 27 Oil Canning
3 Attachment(s)
We found a Catalina that we like, very dry and with great potential overall.

I did notice some "oil canning" in the deck and some spider cracks that show some stress.

Does anyone have experience on this type of issue? Is it normal on a boat this age, 1975, or is it cause for structural concern? maybe Mast stress on the area? There seems to be a covered hole from a heater vent in the same area.

We welcome the forums advice.

Gelcoat spider cracks are pretty normal in old boats. It's usually just a cosmetic issue. However the softness in the deck you seem to be describing can be due to delamination and core rot. That will need further investigation to see if there is a major problem.

Note "oilcanning" usually is used to describe the hull bow sections flexing in heavy weather and waves.

catalina 27 are not usually known for oil canning under sail. but the cracks in the deck happen. gelcoat may fix that...

We passed on this one. I did a much more detailed inspection and the V-berth roof was asymmetrical inside. Starboard side of the front deck was soft when walking on on it. There was definitely de lamination as well as many more faults. Great I had a thorough survey, getting good at it :laugh Thanks for the help.
