Any pre 1990 30 footers with really large cockpits?

Looking for a daysailer/cruiser with a nice open cockpit and wide decks. Would just like to be able to fit 6 people lounging on seats, comings, etc for light wind sails. Still need standing headroom down below in the galley, but not looking for lots of room inside really. Obviously don't want a winch farm, something with clean decks. Willing to go old or vintage. Budget $10-25,000, (hence the pre-1990).

My one suggestion would be to avoid the IOR influenced boats that were common in late 70s and early 80s. Their pinched sterns really cut down on cockpit space.

Catalina 30 has the largest cockpit I've seen on a cruiser

With a little luck, you can pick up a used J/80 for $25k. No galley, but you get a very nice sailing boat from the early 2000s.

I feel like there's a wide difference between a daysailer and a cruiser, your mention of a galley seems to rule out a daysailer...

Try a Nonsuch 22 or 26, fits your needs

Yup, I own a CS27. I love it except for the cockpit size. Of course the wheel doesn't help at all.

Catalina 30 and Nonsuch 30 (if I raise the budget) are on my list.

Tiller offers wide open cockpit when at anchor.
Wheel and binacle take up much space

Not a blanket statement about IOR influenced boats , it depends on the builder and and size.

Our C&C 35 has room for 8 easily in the cockpit. Build quality is important also. One of the real differences between many production boats and non is the older ones and how they have held up. Definitely exposes build quality.

Tartans, C&C s , Ericksonís, Sabreís seem to have many available. Catalina has brand loyalty. Making a brand overall statement might limit you. Look for the best quality boat for the money.

There are many factors. Type of engine and hours, . Quality of equipment ( winches, sterling etc. ) . Ease of movement around the wheel / tiller. Headroom, save wide gunwales. Lead vs iron keel.

I also think youíll find a large difference in IOR sail profile compared to. On IOR, you donít want the slowest, wettest, bobbing boat.

Take you time , shop carefully. The right one will speak to you, but make sure itís not a huge project.

I immediately thought of the Tartan 10, 33 footer. Huge cockpit, very good sailer, believe it's still competitive racing. Oh! but you said standing headroom in the galley. Been a while since I've seen one but galley may be under companionway/pop top so would have headroom at anchor but other than that limited. https://sailboatdata.com/sailboat/tartan-10

I owned a Catalina 30 for about 10 years. It was a great boat; lots of headroom, huge cabin, great big cockpit, and sails quite well. After about 1986 the problem of the "smile" was fixed at production. Earlier models you need a good inspection for that issue. Over all, an excellent boat.
