Hunter 240-Bent Mast

I am looking at a 2002 Hunter 240. The owner is not available to talk to. The top part of the mast is bent with a slight curve from the shrouds up; looks as if he ran the boat under a bridge. The mast is in O.K. shape with no cracks or abrasions at all. I am asking the experienced sailors out there if a slight curve would be a problem.

Is it really a bend? Can't really see in the photo... If the curve is just front to back that might be normal due to setting the shrouds too tight....

I owned a 23.5. Its a nice light air boat, on an inland lake it was great. Not so much when the wind is over 18-20.
Looks pretty neglected, and there are plenty around, if you go thru with it, the price should reflect that.......

Re: Hunter 240-Bent Mast

It's hard to tell from these pix what the mast really looks like. Is there anything that looks like a kink, dent, ding, crease, or any kind of sharp bend? From what you say it sounds lie a gradual bend or curve. If there had been any kind of impact ("running the boat under a bridge" I would think there would be some obvious damage. is it possible the mast has been tightly tied down on top of he boat and has taken a set from that? How does the foil for the furler look? Any kinks?

Re: Hunter 240-Bent Mast

Easiest solution is to undo the shrouds and backstay and lift the mast to the ground for inspection. They're not that heavy for a 24' Trailer sailer. That's a chance to check the steaming light wiring and bulb as well.
