Cal 22 - Keel Separation

Last year I purchased a Cal 22. I had it in the water on Lake Ontario for a little over a month. I sailed about 8 times, and never hit bottom.

However, when hauling the boat out last year, the keel had separated from the boat base. When the boat was lifted with a travelift, there was about a one inch gap. The keel did not detach, but was loose. The boat interior was dry. You could see the several bolts in the gap, hold thing keel in place.

I believe sailing that season exacerbated a previous issue.

Has anyone experienced an issue like that? And if so, what type of damage did you see and what was the extent of the repairs?

Much appreciated. This will help with estimate expectations (and repair recommendations). Thanks! Steve.

Re: Cal 22 - Keel Separation

I'm surprised that you did not have water leaking in around those keel bolts. Did the bolts loosen? Can they be tightened? I would think that, the least, you need to rebed the Keel with a good marine sealant (3M 5200) then tighten the keelbolts to the proper torque. Unfortunately, There is no good source for CAL 22 help, as the original builder is long out of business (1989) and the build specs were lost though shady dealings of the company that allegedly bought the tooling and build rights.

The shoe (what the keel attaches too) needs to be scrutinized for softness and water permeation. dried out.. It's 22 so you should not need heavy equipment.

Is it a fin keel or drop keel/centerboard?

Re: Cal 22 - Keel Separation

Hi, thanks for the reply(s)! Yeah, I was surprised too (and thankful) no water leaked in! The bolts did loosen, but not very much (enough to create a small gap).

I ended up finding a local marine repair shop that helped me out, and did a great job. And pretty much did what you mentioned. Lowered the keel, cleaned both surfaces, sealed with a marine sealant (5200 I think), and tightened the bolts.

Thanks! Steve.

It is a fixed keel.
