Cal 20 - what size of motor?

I own a Cal 20 and I have a Mercury 6 hp motor. The motor has about 20 hrs on it. The gear shift will click into reverse, the propellers move but the boat won't go backward. I called a repair shop and they said I need a bigger motor, I don't agree. Any ideas why my motor isn't working properly or any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks for your help!

6HP is plenty to move that boat, not sure of the prop dynamics in reverse. Does the repair shop sell a lot of motors? If so, consult a different shop.

I had an Evinrude fisherman (6hp) on a Cal 20 for lotsa' years. Worked great.

6 hp is more than enough. You say the prop "moves" in reverse. What do you mean by that? Is it getting appropriate power, spinning in reverse at high RPM?

The gear shift clicks into reverse, the propeller spins, the motor revs but the boat doesn't move.

Does it work normally in forward now? Did it work normally in reverse previously? When in reverse and you increase the throttle, can you clearly see the water churning and flowing towards the bow?

Re: Cal 20 - what size of motor?

I don't have any problems going forward but the reverse has been a problem since I bought the motor. When in reverse I can see the water churning (not sure about flowing to the bow).

I bought the motor from a friend who had the motor mounted to a dinghy.

Short shaft motor from a dingy? it may not allow the prop to be deep enough in the water to give enough thrust in reverse. as the stern or the motor rises when moving in reverse

Re: Cal 20 - what size of motor?

short shaft motor will also direct the reverse flow of water into the forward end of the motor well which is much lower then the aft side blocking some of the thrust from going under the boat
