Coronado 30- Caribbean capable?

Hey everyone,

I have been volunteering in the Florida Keys for a little bit now and have come into possibly a position where I may be gifted a Coronado 30. She needs some work(mast isn't up due to lack of rigging), but has a solid engine (so I'm told). I'll be looking at the boat come next Monday so I'll have first hand knowledge of the state of her.

I am looking to hear what people's opinions are on these boats for being capable of cruising Caribbean? We will be sailing from one of the keys here(likely marathon or Key West).

Info is limited on them so it's hard to know what these boats are designed for/capable of.

Thanks!

The Coronado's were lightweight coastal cruisers - sort of an econo line to the Columbias with which they shared many components - especially the hulls.

Wouldn't be on my list of possibilities for offshore sailing.

Depends.....
What do you mean by Caribbean cruising?
Bopping around the Bahamas or Drakes Channel is one thing. Getting there is another. Crossing the Caribbean Sea is a third.
Some of the most challenging sailing can be going east for long distances or crossing a rage or just being there in the wrong season. Folks think of their experiences while there on a charter boat in benign conditions but unfortunately it ain’t necessarily so.

Be careful. The saying "There's no such thing as a free boat" wasn't made up by yacht brokers. I'm sure there are plenty of members on here who can attest to the fact that they spent more fixing up a 'fixer-upper' than they would have on the same boat in fairly good to sail away condition. Never mind the time and sweat equity.

"Any idiot can make a boat go; it takes a sailor to stop one." Spike Africa aboard the schooner Wanderer in Sausalito, Ca. 1964.
“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” ― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows
