For the Love of Sail - Mads Bo Falk and s/v Mathilde

We've met a lot of sailors in our travels, but few who seem to enjoy the simple act of sailing as much as Mads Bo Falk. He insists sailing must be in his DNA for, from the time he was a child, he has had a passionate love for sailboats and the sea. Join us as he recalls his earliest voyages, introduces us to The Freedom Equation, and shares the people who inspired him. With a mantra of 'Go Small, Go Simple, Go Now!' Mads takes us on a journey from dreams to reality.

This is a preview for an upcoming five part series with Danish sailor Mads Bo Falk which also includes an extensive tour of his cruising sailboat Mathilde.

The Dream: Pocket Size - An Interview with Mads Bo Falk from s/v Mathilde, Part 1

We ran into Mads and his children in the Faroe Islands and he was kind enough to sit for an interview. In this part he recalls the first person in the family to get the sailing bug (it's not who you think it is) and his initial voyages and adventures. From the family boat to his own sailing dinghy, Mads hones his skills and falls deeper in love with the simple act of sailing. Join us as he explains how he made his pocket sized dream a full blown reality.

The Freedom Equation

The Freedom Equation - An Interview with Mads Bo Falk from s/v Mathilde, Part 2

In this episode, Mads talks about the various places he has visited and his boat Mathilde, a Polaris Drabant 26. He also explains what he calls 'The Freedom Equation' which is something he falls back on to evaluate the best way to maximise the time he can spend on the water. This husband and father of two has found a way, in the midst of a busy life, to make his sailing dreams possible.

These interviews are some of your best stuff.

Although, I am looking forward to seeing a vid on your Greenland passage.

Cabin Tour of s/v Mathilde

Mads Bo Falk strives to keep it simple and safe aboard his Polaris Drabant called Mathilde. Take a peek inside this 26 ft boat that slept up to five (5!!!) during a four month circumnavigation of England. See a unique way to gain more comfortable sleeping berths by tweaking storage panels (*hint-what goes up must come down!), where to keep anchor chain on such a small boat, and much more!

Cabin Tour of s/v Mathilde, Part 2

In this second part of the cabin tour we check out inventive uses for mosquito netting (guess what's stored inside!), a Navtex system to gather weather reports, an amazing stove top oven, and one of the most versatile uses of space we've seen on a boat. (How many different things do you think can fit in the aft quarter of a boat?!) Mathilde, a Polaris Drabant 26 keeps, keeps surprising us with her well thought out storage solutions in a tiny space!

I can't watch, until meet home tomorrow evening at the earliest. Does he give up how he creates meat in those glass jars, that doesn't spoil?

Hi Minnewaska, Mads uses a pressure cooker/canner to can the meats and home made soups. I think it's amazing! I'm looking forward to getting a pressure canner and mason jars to stock up on years worth of meats. Here's a great video that shows how to pressure can chicken.

So, it's just canning. I thought he was doing something different. Thanks.

I wonder if a pressure cooker is sufficient or if one needs a specific canner.
