Camp Cruising the Thousand Islands

I have shot a bunch of footage this summer of cruising and camping in the Thousand Islands on my Bay Hen. I think it will turn out to be about 5, 10 minute episodes when I am done editing. I have tried to focus mostly on the islands and river itself.

Here is my first episode. Feedback is always welcome of course.

Part 3, weather bound in a 21 ft boat for a few days. We cooked up a storm.

Re: Camp Cruising the Thousand Islands

I was moored in Picton harbour during this ‘wonderful’ event. Something like forty of these damn noisy and stinky boats went past us twice (in and out) to get their stamp, or card, or whatever they do on these runs. Not fun...

We enjoy seeing some of the race tech in action. The first boat that went past us supposedly has twin turbine 3000 hp engines and has been clocked past 200 mph. Pretty quick for a 50 ft boat. But yes, I agree it can cause a bit of sensory over load.

Yup. Kinda exciting when they’re here and gone, but hours of them passing by was a bit hard to take. In fact, we left the boat and went to town.

I wonder how maneuverable these boats are at speed? Your video showed them passing somewhat close to you. What would happen if you were in the channel? You certainly could not move out of their way fast enough if there was a CBDR. Can they? Given their speeds, I have my doubts…

I guess I really don’t have any appreciation for this kind of boat. To me, they’re like Harley motorcycles: loud, obnoxious, expensive, and not very useful (oh, am I in trouble ).

Re: Camp Cruising the Thousand Islands

Some of them were pretty close, closer than I would have liked. A lot of the channels in the TI aren't very wide, the two fast cats passed me near Jackstraw shoal where the channel is really narrow. I shot the whole vid with a wide angle lens, no zoom.

I don't think those boats are in very good control at those high speeds. This little clip is of one of the big cats (50ft) losing it during the 2012 Poker Run (not my footage).

Re: Camp Cruising the Thousand Islands

I am getting a bit behind on editing as we have been out exploring Nova Scotia and a tornado knocked out our home internet. Here is the next installment. Just easy sailing and even easier camping.
