This boat gets well used in the Caribbean racing circuit, and does extremely well. It might not work well to have all the conveniences of main sail retention that a short handed cruising boat might have. The crew on these passage are well versed coastal sailors, often owning their own 50 foot boats. They are on board to get the off shore experience. Hand steering is part of the process to learn how to handle the boat and keep everyone occupied. For years, I used to captain the Swan 46, 48 and 53s for OPO, Offshore Passage Opportunities, doing the Newport to St. Maarten run in early November, and the reverse trip in the spring. Always a fun trip with great charter crew. St. Georges, Bermuda, is one place I never got tired of stopping at.
