I've no idea where you got $500 from, for the marinised exhaust manifold. As far as I know, they are not available new for any price. In fact, if you know where to get one, let me know, because I'll buy one right now.

Cost of boat : $45,000

Cost of re-power : $15,000

and you're panicking about $500 for a manifold, which might extend the engine life by 10 years?

The issue with a dry manifold is not so much the radiated heat, it's the exhaust temperature entering the rest of the exhaust, which is made with RUBBER hosing. In fact, wrapping the exhaust manifold will make the exhaust gases HOTTER.

Hi Mark,
My boat is certainly not worth what you quoted, and while I won't be sure until I get the head off (it's stuck to the block pretty securely and is soaking in Sea Foam now), I seriously doubt that my engine has 15 years left in it!

Here is the manifold listed at Torreson if it could help you (for $550) Universal 300418 Sailboat Supplies, Engine Parts and Boat Parts

At least on my engine, the rubber exhaust hosing doesn't begin until after the water is injected (the riser is made of iron) and the water would mix with the exhaust down the last fall in the riser, passing through four inches of rubber exhaust hosing, and combining in the water muffler. I'm honestly interested in Rafael's experience running a dry manifold as the alternator and starter are very close to the exhaust manifold and I'm curious as to whether they've suffered damage! My manifold is probably okay right now (getting it pressure tested at the machine shop when I take the head in) but curious as to how it worked out for Rafael.

Also, Rafael, did you have any issues getting your head off? Mine seems stuck on with superglue (most likely due to saltwater corrosion around one of the studs and a bolt). I've tapped it with a rubber mallet, hauled on it with a block and tackle, poured sea foam down the stud/bolt holes, and turned the engine over with the glow plugs and injectors in trying to get the compression to blow it off - but no luck. Please share any tips you used!
