I am looking to replace the air filter. Apparently the PO used an aftermarket filter on the engine. The old silencer (not installed) is a rust bucket. The silencer is an obsolete part, unavailable to purchase. Anyone using any after market filters? Brand and model?

Measure carefully and try an auto parts store. There is quite an assortment of filters and housings available. I found a nearly exact copy of one for the dual carburated Volvo at Advance Auto Parts.

Also there is an assortment of smaller ones at lawn mower repair shops.

Suggest you look at K&N automotive filters; but, NOT the 'oil bath' type --- only the 'dry' pleated paper cartridge types.

Go to the K&N website there 'should' be a filter sizing chart based on your engine displacement (cu. in.) and max. rpm .... that will get you to 'cubic feet per minute - maximum' which will yield the proper filter size/surface area.... and then choose the 'housing' with the appropriate size of the same dimension of your engine's air intake.
