yanmar 4JH45

I am trying to determine the max rpm for a Yanmar 4jh45. The owners manual uses a unit of
min^-1. I am looking for what this unit is and how it relates to rpm.

Re: yanmar 4JH45

Hey JoeDunn:
rpm = (revolutions)/(minutes) = (revolutions)(minutes^(-1)) . ^-1 is notation for the reciprocal.

min^-1 would be the same as 1/(minutes)

Hope that this helps and is understandable.

regards charlie

I'm pretty sure they are the same thing.

People can say they want freedom, but offer them the keys to what chains them, a map to where they want to go,
And they'll turn it down for the cell they know

Re: yanmar 4JH45

Mathematically, if you have X to the negative 1 power, it's the same as dividing by X. ie minutes to the negative 1 power (min^-1) is the same as dividing by minutes.

Revolutions per minute is the same as saying revolutions divided by minutes. Minutes to the negative one power is, therefore, the published value "per minute". That's my take.

Stupid way of putting it in an operators manual.

As an engineer who occasionally has to write technical documentation for laymen, I couldn't agree more.

My rule of thumb has been "If a non-specialist can't understand it in a single read, it's too technical."

I often get annoyed when documentation I read makes a lot of assumptions or doesn't contain clear step-by-step instructions. *glares at Thunderstruck*
