2007 Beneteau 343 engine noise

I was on a 2007 Beneteau 343 last weekend and noticed a strange behavior.

Sometimes when shifting from reverse to forward the engine starts making a very bad noise. It is banging and really rough. All that has to happen is to adjust the throttle a little and it stops.

This is a Yanmar with a single lever throttle.

Any ideas as to what to look at.

It may be related to switching too fast from reverse to forward.

Sounds like low rpm's at idle, yanmar and Perkins 3 cylinder engines do it when speed drops below about 800 rpm. Very disconcerting isn't it ?

Our 3 banger Yanmar has a disconcerting unbalanced shake at 800 rpm....goes away with throttle....was it more than the normal?

I think my old Yanmar manual says to take a pause between switching gears...?

Two comments. When cold, my Yanmar 3GM30F will shake if the RPMs are too low. A slight increase in the throttle and she settles down. Not an issue when warm. Second thought is it could be a folding prop not opening properly.

Hey,

Is this a traditional shaft with strut and cutless bearing? If so I would inspect the strut.

Are you sure it wasn’t the gear making the noise?

Possibly the damper plate.

My volvo will go clunky for a few secs when a new load kicks in when running at idle... compressor or maybe even the alternator... add some throttle and it quiets down.

Had an engine once that would sound clunky on start up, then settle down. Turned out it was pieces/parts of the broken damper plate that were rattling around, until they got stuck somewhere in the rotation.
