So little information, and so many possibilities.

Trailer plugs in the wiring harness - We've been drawing attention to these since before 2008, and the FCO from Catalina is from from 1992. Here it is;


Smoke could even oiginate from the stuffing box being too tight, and you're smoking the packing.

Need more info...

Have you checked the temperature of the stuffing box ?
