If I remember right the audible alarm comes in with either oil pressure (steady) or water temp switch (pulsing).

As a previous poster said, it does that because the switch (es) close to ground when in fault and thus complete the circuit.

I should have clarified, this is a third-party buzzer added by a previous owner. The original Westerbeke buzzer and the 4-pin cable that connected it are long gone. Westerbeke's wiring diagram is only helpful up to a point.

What you describe is perfectly normal.
Your 12V supply earths through the oil pressure switch.
When the engine is stopped, the oil pressure switch is closed and when you first turn the key, there is a circuit path through the alarm and through the closed switch.
When the engine starts, the oil pressure pushes the oil pressure switch open and opens the circuit to kill the alarm.
