Westerbeke 30B wont run, any ideas?

I am helping my friend with his Gemini that has a Westerbeke 30B, 3 cylinder. The engine with about 4000 hours. It has been working fine, but last month he made it to the outer channel marker and the engine quit. Since then we have tried several things but no luck.

The symptoms are the engine acts like it wants to start, and will sometimes run for 30 seconds to a minute, but very rough, giving off smoke and soot on the water, then quits.

I don't want to drag out this post so I won't go into the whole troubleshooting story, but to summarize,
we found some water and crud in the fuel, so he changed the filters and had the tanks drained and re-filled.
He also had the injectors rebuilt and the high pressure pump replaced thinking they may have become plugged.
I am wondering if there may be an air leak somewhere, but we are running out of ideas. I would appreciate any thoughts of what our next troubleshooting steps should be!

Had a similar thing happen on my Yanmar. Turned out to be a tiny crack in the bowl of a new racor filter that I had purchased and installed. Sometimes it just turns out to be the simplest things that can befuddle us.

Compression check? do you have fuel being pumped to the injector pump? do you have fuel being pumped to the injectors?

Re: Westerbeke 30B wont run, any ideas?

Thanks for replying, I did see fuel spraying from 2 of the injectors before he had them rebuilt, but have not verified since then. I volunteered to do a compression check, but he has declined, thinking that the engine was working fine until it wasn't. I suspect he does not want to consider what bad compression might entail ;-)
One area I have not checked is the exhaust and riser, and when this whole thing started I noticed that the rear most injector was loose in the head with some blow-by happening. At the time I figured this was the problem, but tightening the injector down did not seem to make a difference. I am suspicious as it was the rear injector.

Harbor Freight has a compression meter for diesel for about $40 that we could try.

I know that you said, that you saw fuel out of two injectors.

But, On the simpler side of the equation. Is there a screen on the end of the pick-up tube in the fuel tank? If So, and you can access the pick-up Tube, I'd pull it and remove the screen.

If you can't easily do that, See where you can break the fuel line before the filter, and blow air back through the line. If there was a lot of crud in the tank, the screen could be clogged and starving the fuel supply.

I believe the WesterBeke will need to be timed..the injector pump that is. If it has been removed or moved. The shim under the pump housing will need to be adjusted. Similarly the injectors are timed by shim height. All of this is done with the engine at 19 degrees BTDC as indicated on the lower gear case.

This is often best left to an experienced tech, not really something you can fidget to get it running.

the Manual indicating how and why is readily available on the net.

just a thought

Somr injectors compress a copper washer at the tip. Old one need removing and annealed or replaced Not unknown is just putting new one in on top of the old one This is not good.
