I can get my dump trucks to run backwards easy..coast backwards dump clutch...bingo

My two stroke v6 jimmy will start backward from the starter every blue moon or so.

The purchase price of a boat is just the admittance fee to the dance...you still have to spend money on the girl...so court one with something going for her with pleasing and desirable character traits others desire as well... or you could find yourself in a disillusioned relationship contemplating an expensive divorce.

That would explain the low hours and low mileage on the equipment then.

I see I guess a marine engine running in reverse, wouldn't mind pulling the water through the exhaust system, and exhausting through the air intake... oh and somehow the starter windings will magically just reverse... oh and the injectors would fire appropriately... oh and the teeth of the reversed started would somehow engage, or for that matter disengage once it was running... oh and no problem from the impeller, tearing all the splines off from being forced backwards... couldn't possibly affect the oil pump trying to suck the oil out of the galleries to circulate in the bottom of the pan...ya, I must be wrong, must happen all the time... I must not have thought it through, Thanks for straightening me out... (note to self, buy long oars, motor thingy too complicated to be reliable.)

Why, why, why?

how to run the diesel backwards...

mechanical injection....
usually 2 stroke, although many tractor truck 4 strokes will on occasion, especially after a heavy load is applied to the engine, nearly stalls, operator release the load on the back stroke and the inertia will pop it backwards...sometimes the noise is tough (you will know it is backwards) other times, like GMC/jimmy 6, you would hardly know except that it pukes in to your air cleaner...

change filters, lessen the load, and restart...remember to have a working fuel shutoff, else it can run away backwards just like forwards..

newer 4 strokes will often not have oil pressure when running backwards, so you want to shut it down as quickly as possible...

all the best...

(song by Lester Flatt)

Read an ad in Chicago's Sunday paper
Help wanted, semi driver needed bad
I walked in I said I'd like to see the foreman
I told him all the experience that I had

Said son you're just the man I needed
Handed me the keys and shook my hand
He pointed to the truck and said I'll see you
Take that load of steel to Birmingham

Well I finally got inside and got it started
Put it into gear and started backing up
Tried every way to get it going forward
Oh, but I ain't never drove a big old truck

Well it wasn't easy backing through the traffic
And I'll bet I'm the first truck driving man
That ever left Chicago in a semi
And backed it all the way to Birmingham

Well the police pulled me over down in Nashville
What do you think you are doing, I just smiled
I said I just got tired of going forward
And I thought I'd drive it backwards for a while

I backed it in a truck stop and said fill it
And check the oil it probably needs a can
Oh, he said tell me which way are you backing
I said I'm backing south to Birmingham

Well, there must be a button on here somewhere
That I can push to turn this thing around
Well I can make it fine out in the country
But I sure have trouble getting through the town

But if I keep it up I'll finally make it
And I'll bet I'm the first truck driving man
That ever left Chicago in a semi
And backed it all the way to Birmingham

:-)

Diesels

Diesels can most certainly run backwards, I had it happen to me on a tractor.

If it does start backwards, shut it down quick. I would be more inclined to believe you may have a weak ground or bad connection and when the engine hits compression resistance it bucks the starter, starter can't over come the engine and it fires off in reverse as opposed to forward.

Lugging a diesel to the stalling point is a common cause of a motor running backwards. This is exactly what happened to me while running my friends John Deer. I bogged it down, though it never really stalled, and all of a sudden she was running backwards. Blew smoke right out the intake, oil light came on, sounded very funny but was running until I almost immediately shut her down. We changed the air filter, cleaned the intake and she fired right up again. This was not the first time it had happened to this particular tractor. Daren has also had this happen on other engines in his fleet and while rather uncommon it does happen on some engines.

Many early diesel boats, and large freighters have no gearboxes... to reverse they stop the engine and re-start it in the opposite direction.

Are any of theses run backward 4 stroke motors found in small sail boats??

Could someone explain how the 4 strokes work in reverse, it hurts my head just thinking about it.

Intake through the exhaust valve.

Exhaust through the intake valve.

Compression, I don't know, third base!!

Heeeyyy, Abbott!!!
