Bluetooth Connectivity

Some time ago I replaced three serial cables with Bluetooth adapters. Specifically I use Bluetooth Serial Adapter RS232

Two of the connections (SCS Modem, Kenwood 480HX radio) work fine. I can connect, send data, and disconnect at will. The third connection is my problem. Please note that it works - don't start asking me about baud rates and so forth.

The third connection is a NMEA 0183 standard (4800-N-8-1) bidirectional feed from my Garmin Multifunction Display. If I start an application on the PC (for example OpenCPN 4.0) and then power up the Garmin the OpenCPN application receives data and works fine. However if the Garmin is powered up and I start OpenCPN no connection is made.

Other applications (e.g. Clearpoint, RMSExpress) are unable to communicate no matter what order I use to start the app and the Garmin. The COM port is set to no flow control as the Garmin is not producing either a hardware or XonXoff flow control signal.

Re: Bluetooth Connectivity

Is it possible that, of your three devices, the Garmin is the only one which sends data as soon as it is turned on, not waiting for a command or interrogation from the PC?

If so, the PC could be identifying the data stream as a serial mouse. Does the cursor jump around when the Garmin connection is not working?

I've resolved these cases on the past by having the problem manifest itself, then stop the data (to get control of the cursor), go into device manager, find and disable the bogus serial mouse.
