Not sure why you are trying. Just because the engine is hot, does not insure the thermostat opened, if it's faulty. Pull it. This should be simple.

I just reread this, at the minimum you should have temp and oil pressure (buzzer), Volts at the panel is good too, but at lease temp and oil. Temp especially on heat exchanger motors, on Raw water cooled engines flow out of exhaust is enough to monitor in a pinch but not fool proof.
