Keel Damage Questions

I am looking at a mid 70s Ericson which appears to be in pretty good condition. However, I noticed a problem with the keel which I have attached in the photos. Could anyone tell me how bad this is and what, if any, is the repair? Any idea how something like this would happen? Any info would be much appreciated.

Re: Keel Damage Questions

What model? looks like a 23-2 centerboard model. the leading edge most likely was removed by hitting something underwater. there should not be any foam showing. does the boat still have the centerboard in the keel? use to sail on one when they were new but it was a deep keel model.

Re: Keel Damage Questions

I don't know much about it. It's a 23' Ericson and I'm going to have to do a bit more investigating. Thanks for the initial help!

I know nothing about the boat, but that damage looks like it could be caused by centerboard cable failure and the board slamming into whatever stops it.

Re: Keel Damage Questions

Looks like the centerboard is missing. That can be a huge problem. Not a repair for a novice. Given the glut of decent boats in this category, I would not recommend buying it.
