Freedom 38 Mast

Hello,
I am interested in purchasing a 1990 Freedom 38. I have done some research and everything sounds good on these boats for the most part. My main concern after reading different blogs would be the price of a mast if struck by lightning and was wondering would insurance cover this cost if so happen it was struck?
Thanks James

I would check with the insurance company. I have seen people covered for a lightning strike as it is obviously no fault of yours. Companies could be different with different coverage.

Re: Freedom 38 Mast

It would be with the last two insurance companies we have had, and don't see why it shouldn't be covered. It would be no different than a strike blowing holes through the boat bottom and needing repair, or a strike blowing out $40K of electronic or electrical equipment that needed replacing.

Re: Freedom 38 Mast

The previous owner of my boat had both masts replaced under insurance after lightning damage.

As with anything contractual, you should read all the fine print and if it doesn't say that you're covered by an "Act of God," then you should get it in writing whether lightning damage is part of the policy. Different underwriters will cover different things...

There are signs that a bonding systems was set up at some point but I don't know when it was disconnected. Right now there is a lightning dissipator installed on the top of the main mast with about a #8 insulated copper wire running down it but not connected to the the thru-hulls.
