Nissan/Tohatsu M3.5A (3 hp) removing Prop problem
 
I have two friends. Each have motors that look similar. They seem to both be Tohatsu M3.5A outboards. One is branded Mercury and is pretty new, about 2005. The other is a Nissan older perhaps 1998.

They both had leaking gas tanks which I replaced. They both started and ran, but would not drive the boat. They both have plastic props.

I worked on the Mercury first. I pulled the cotter pin holding the prop, and I spun the prop right off. The shear pin was sheared and buried in the plastic internally. I replaced the shear pin, put the prop right back on. The motor started, ran and drove the 14 foot boat along at a good clip.


On the Nissan, I can't seem to get the prop off. I pulled the cotter pin, but when I spin the prop it doesn't seem to unscrew, but just spins on the shaft. Any ideas on how I can get it off with out cutting it off?

Put the motor in gear to learn if it is really spinning
As posted above, may need a puller

If your motor is like mine, the prop would not screw on the shaft but would just press on over the shear pin. I wonder if your shear pin is broken on this one too and just enough is left sticking out to hold the prop? Have you tried prying between the prop and the impeller housing on the motor (big flat bar or screwdriver?)

Where and how do I apply it? The end is enclosed and not a separate screw out section as found on larger Propellers.

Note that pulling straight off by hand has been ineffective so far

How do you know it's spinning on the shaft and not with the shaft? Perhaps the shaft needs to be locked. You could put it in gear, but something more mechanical would be better than straining against the drive gears, unless it lets go easily.

You'll have to call Spanky on that one. I had a friend that needed to pull a steering wheel on his R.V., he had been working on it a couple of hours when I got there and we decided that he needed to take a break. While we were having a cold beer to re-group, Spanky (a mechanic ) pulled up. My friend told him what he was trying to do and Spanky stepped into the RV to take a look. Before we could finish the last swig of that cold beer, Spanky came back out of the RV with wheel in hand and big grin on his face.
Sometimes it's best to just call Spanky.

I used a Mark 1 Hammer. Worked great:

Think I'll replace the prop as well since I think the plastic gouged out by the bent shear pin was what kept the prop on.

Looks like you handled it the same way that Spanky would have. Sometimes it's hard for mere mortals to think like a mechanic. It is for me anyway. The two things that I have hated doing most of my life are mechanic work and plumbing. Owning a sailboat has made me re-evaluate the way that I look at both of these tasks. Now i'm able to tolerate them..... Sorta

The manual for that motor is available online somewhere. PM me with your email address and I can send it to you.

The solution is frequently to use a BFH.
