Edel 665 halyard winch handle

I have an Edel 665 built in 1980. I'm trying to identify the manufacturer of the winch used for the main and foresail halyards. They are not drum but cam clutch in design. on the front side of the handles are an "N" and "M" with a stylized sail boat in between the two letters. On the reverse is a US Patent NO. " 3770244". I'm hoping to replace or rebuild the handles which have a spring and nylon tube inserted at the attachment point. Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Edel 665 halyard winch handle

Can you post pictures?

The original patent was filed by Robert McCloud in 1972.
A schematic of the system is located https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=p.../US3770244.pdf
I couldn't find any reference to the patent being assigned to anyone, and I don't know that branding. From the patent itself it looks like a pretty odd little winch however.

Re: Edel 665 halyard winch handle

Thanks, I had gotten the same info from PTO. The only difference between what is on my boat and the original patent diagram is that mine are mounted vertically on the the main mast with lines fed up from the internal halyard runs. I have pictures if that might help identify the manufacturer.

hmmmm...interesting - mine is a Lewmar 6 on the mast and 7's for the jib sheets and original to the boat - and a 1980 as well (Canadian built I believe) - this will be fun to watch what you find out.

Also, perhaps you may have a French built version.

Mitch,

I have never seen anything like that... I couldn't even begin to guess where to get spare parts. Sorry.

Re: Edel 665 halyard winch handle

Looks more like some kind of 'super cam cleat' that needs extra leverage to release (hence the handle).. don't see that as being any kind of winch...

Re: Edel 665 halyard winch handle

I have one of those on my Edel. Had no idea what is was used for and still don't get it. My lewmar is on the deck just beside the hatch, on the wrong side. I dropped the mast for first time since I bought it and in the spring I will run the main halyard out the correct side of the mast.

My boat is all wrapped up otherwise I would go get the handle an look at it more closely.

Re: Edel 665 halyard winch handle

Looks like a line jammer to me - not any kind of winch. Designed to protrude from the mast less than the conventional type. A boat that size doesn't require a halyard winch really.
