Rub Rail Falling Off

The gray, vinyl rub rail on my 1996 Catalina is in good condition, but it tends to fall out of its aluminum track. When this happens, I'm able the to snap it back into the track, but it certainly needs fixing, as once it starts to separate, the entire rub rail could exit the boat.

Any advice on how to fix it? If the answer is an adhesive, which one?

The rub rail is likely falling out because it has shrunk and is no longer a tight fit in the track.
If you're determined to save it you could screw it down every few feet using the existing holes that are securing the track, just use slightly longer screws to account for the thickness of the rubber rail. It's a temporary solution with no downside and no adhesive to remove later when you eventually replace it.
I would just replace it. There are plenty of sources online.

Re: Rub Rail Falling Off

Having owned a few Catalinas, I know what you are talking about. You can contact Catalina parts and they will have a heavier rubber insert that fits the exact aluminum extrusion. I believe it was originally used on the Morgan 38. Since installing the heavier vinyl insert, the problem has gone away. Good luck.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I might as well go ahead and get the new vinyl rail. It's only money.

Re: Rub Rail Falling Off

Also, the rubrail is directional due to the screws holding the metal, if it was inserted upside down it would keep getting pushed out. I have 2 pieces of the insert leftover from a "94 C270 and a 2002 boat. I think they are about 14 to 17 feet each, your welcome to them if the shipping isn't more than they are worth. The webpage below has a picture that shows the contour of the back, and how it clears the screws.

It's a LOT of money - that stuff is $$$ per foot. Stick it in with some poly adhesive like 4200 or even 5200 if you use it sparingly.

I, myself, personally intend to continue being outspoken and opinionated, intolerant of all fanatics, fools and ignoramuses, deeply suspicious of all those who have "found the answer" and on my bad days, downright rude.
