Chart Plotters

Any recommendations for inexpensive chart plotters? I'm not interested in fish. I really only am interested in a graphical chart GPS that shows where I am on a chart.

Would an app for my iPhone be just as good?

Re: Chart Plotters

I absolutely love my Garmin 10" chartplotter and it's been 100% spot on every where we've been (except the ICW), but it certainly couldn't be considered inexpensive. Then again, it is a lot less expensive than the repairs one might have if one was using a difficult to read and unreliable unit.

Re: Chart Plotters

There's OpenCPN that's FREE, that you can load on a computer you probably already have. Add a GPS antenna and you're good.

not sure of iPhone. I know Active Captain has an app for Android, maybe iPhone too? I have MX Mariner on Android that works well.

I can pick up a used 3G 1st generation model for about $110. After buying a water proof case for another 15 bucks, It would be about $125. I don't know of any Garmins or others that are that priced unless they too are used like the iPad.

Thanks.

Just make sure that you can put the latest OS on it. Sometimes the apps won't be supported on older devices if they load at all.

Re: Chart Plotters

If you want to simple things... no need for radar... just a plotter.... a mobile device works great with Navionics, for example... Android, IOS.... phone or tablet.

Chart plotters now are MFDs which handle all manner of inputs... AIS, radar, speed log, compass... wind and so on... and GPS of course.

Re: Chart Plotters

I've had great luck with my Lowrance Elite 5 DSI.

It was about $450 4 years ago. They make (made?) a model '4' that was cheaper.

It won't connect to other sensors or busses except its own sonar, so it's a dead end device. It has worked fine for hundreds of miles. 5" display; 480x480pix;

I'm a big fan of an installed chartplotter connected to the boat's 12V system; I guess I'm just a dinosaur.
