If you are concerned, you can go to the expense of changing out the sheaves or machining the sheaves so they don't have the wire groove. My experience is it's a waste of time. Have sailed 5 figure miles with rope halyards on the rope/wire sheaves including SoPac and back and a solo sail to Hawaii. Never a problem running straight rope in the combo wire/rope sheaves.

True, it is possibly overkill, but then that's why we have boats. Overkill is an acceptable method. :laugh

I also was going from external halyards to internal, so I felt that it might decrease the total friction in the system.

This old Hyde furler looks like another can of worms. It sure looks solid though. I plan to track down the bearing size and repack the bearings for starters. Anyone tackle one?
