Singing mast

Our Hoodstoway mast will "sing" (or as others might say, "she wails like a banshee") when we are sailing on a certain angle to the wind, or even at anchor (wind against the current scenario).
I have not noticed this with the larger, more modern yachts w/IMF.
Does anyone know if the slot design on newer boats has been changed to solve this problem?
Fortunately, the PO had a cover built for when is on the hard or in a slip, so we aren't run out of yards or marinas tarred and feathered.

"Any idiot can make a boat go; it takes a sailor to stop one." Spike Africa aboard the schooner Wanderer in Sausalito, Ca. 1964.
“Believe me, my young friend, there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” ― Kenneth Grahame, The Wind in the Willows
